June 14th 1987-Hawaii Hotel, Bukok, South Korea Kyung Yung Lee (10-0, 3) vs Masaharu Kawakami (0-0)* In the summer of 1987 we had the first ever IBF Minimumweight title bout, which was held in South Korea and saw the unbeaten Kyung Yung Lee [이경연] battle Japanese debutant Masaharu Kawakami in Bukok. *This bout took place back before the JBC recognised the IBF, and on screen graphics suggest Kawakami had fought professionally before this bout, however no record is clearly given. The records kept of IBF Japan fighters is sketchy at best, and he may well have had several "unofficial" bouts prior to this one or it may be that those in Korea fabricated or embellished his record.

June 14th 1987-Hawaii Hotel, Bukok, South Korea Kyung Yung Lee (10-0, 3) vs Masaharu Kawakami (0-0)* In June 1987 fight fans in Korea saw the unbeaten Kyung Yung Lee [이경연] take on the debuting Masaharu Kawakami in the first ever IBF Minimumweight title fight, in what is a strangely historic bout. *This bout took place back before the JBC recognised the IBF, and on screen graphics suggest Kawakami had fought professionally before this bout, however no record is clearly given. The records kept of IBF Japan fighters is sketchy at best, and he may well have had "unofficial" bouts prior to this one. January 31st 1988-Osaka-Jo Hall, Osaka, Osaka, Japan Hiroki Ioka (9-0, 5) vs Kyung Yung Lee (11-0, 4) In 1987 we saw the recognition of the Minimumweight division. the first champion of which was IBF title holder Kyung Yung Lee [이경연]. Lee vacated the title soon after winning it to face WBC champion Hiroki Ioka [井岡 弘樹], who had become the youngest Japanese world champion when he had won his title in October 1987. Essentially these were the two best 105lb fighters and both were wanting to prove it. July 11th 1993-Provincial Stadium, Nakhon Sawan, Thailand Pichit Sithbanprachan (16-0, 13) Vs Kyung Yung Lee (20-2, 8) In 1992 Thailand's Pichit Sithbanprachan claimed the IBF Flyweight title. In his second defense he took on former IBF Minimumweight champion Kyung Yung Lee, whose only previous losses were to Hiroki Ioka and Ricardo Lopez. In both of those previous losses the Korean had gone very late into the bout before being stopped. (Note-Fight starts at 9:20 following some highlights of the Thai) |
