May 6th 2013-Ota-City General Gymnasium, Tokyo, Japan Kohei Kono (28-7, 11) Vs Liborio Solis (14-3-1, 7) In 2015 Kohei Kono [河野 公平] made a name for himself by scoring a major win on US TV. Before that bout however he had been a popular fighter in Japan with numerous exciting bouts, one of which was a WBA "regular"/WBA "interim" unification bout against Liborio Solis. If you've never seen this one you really should put some time aside for a brilliant and often over-looked Super Flyweight war. September 20th 2010-Super Arena, Saitama, Saitama, Japan Kohei Kono (25-4, 9) Vs Tomas Rojas (33-12-1, 23) Japan's Kohei Kono [河野 公平] has become an unlikely hero of Japanese boxing in recent years, though for much of his career he was the tough guy trier rather than the world class winner. His second world title fight saw him go up against Mexico's Tomas Rojas in a bout for the WBC Super Flyweight title. September 16th 2015-UIC Pavilion, Chicago, Illinois, USA Kohei Kono (30-8-1, 13) Vs Koki Kameda (33-1, 18) Earlier this year we saw history being created courtesy of the PBC who put on the first ever all-Japanese world title to be held in the US. The bout saw WBA Super Flyweight champion Kohei Kono taking on Japanese bad boy Koki Kameda in what was an excellent and highly anticipated bout. If you missed this one it's worth catching now, and if you saw it, you will likely want to watch it again! December 31st 2012- Ota-City General Gymnasium, Tokyo, Japan Tepparith Kokietgym (21-2, 13) Vs Kohei Kono (27-7, 10) Japan's New Year Eve shows have become a staple of the boxing calendar in recent years and typically we see two competing shows. One of those has been an Ioka show featuring Kazuto Ioka and Ryo Miyazaki whilst the other has been a Watanabe show featuring Takashi Uchiyama and Kohei Kono. To 2012 Kono got his shot at the then WBA Super Flyweight champion Tepparith Kokietgym in what was a make or break fight for Kono against a man who was in sensational form and was 3-0 (1) in world title fights in Japan with notable wins over Daiki Kameda, Tomonobu Shimizu and Nabuo Nashiro. December 31st 2014- Ota-City General Gymnasium, Tokyo, Japan Kohei Kono (30-8, 13) Vs Norberto Jimenez (20-8-3, 10) In 2014 we saw Japan's popular Kohei Kono become a 2-weight world champion, courtesy of his win over Denkaosan Kaovichit. Sadly he was unable to really capitalise on that win due to the politics of boxing and he had to wait the better part of a year to make his first defence. That eventually came when he got in the ring on New Year's Eve and took on ultra-confident Dominican challenger Norberto Jimenez. It's fair to say that 2014 has been a year of mixed emotions for Kohei Kono. He kicked off the year expecting it to be a big year for his career and early on it looked that way as he lined up a fight for the WBA Super Flyweight title against Thailand's Denkaosan Kaovichit. Sadly the months following the bout have been thoroughly frustrating for the Japanese hard man who has been frozen out of action due to domestic issues with the man he is expected to fight next. Rather than dwelling on the issues however we thought we'd bring you this video of the bout between Kono and Kaovichit which certainly a notable fight. Even more so when you consider that Kaovichit had beaten Kono's compatriot Nobuo Nashiro in his previous bout and that this bout was both a world title bout and a chance to reignite the always great Thailand Vs Japan rivalry. We won't ruin the bout though we are looking forward to seeing both men in the ring again before the year is over. |
