August 4th 1985-Munhwa Gymnasium, Seoul, South Korea Jung-Koo Chang (27-1, 12) vs Francisco Montiel (18-3, 12) I In the mid 1980's Korean fans twice saw the brilliant Jung Koo Chang [장정구] battle Mexican tough Francisco Montiel. Here's the first of those two bout. December 15th 1984-Busan, South Korea Jung-Koo Chang (25-1, 12) vs Tadashi Kuramochi (12-1-2, 5) In the 1980's Korea had two great Light Flyweights. One of those was Jung Koo Chang [장정구] who can be seen here facing Tadashi Kuramochi of Japan, who had claimed the Japanese title in his previous bout. April 13th 1986-Indoor Arena, Gwangju City, South Korea Jung-Koo Chang (29-1, 12) vs German Torres (52-9-1, 42) III In the space of 2 years Korean fighter Jung Koo Chang [장정구] and Mexican fighter German Torres fought a trilogy. Here is the third fight from that trilogy. March 31st 1984-Kooduk Gymnasium, Busan, South Korea Jung-Koo Chang (23-1, 11) vs Sot Chitalada (4-0, 3) In 1984 Korean great Jung Koo Chang [장정구] fought Thailand's Sot Chitalada [สด จิตรลดา], in the first of two bouts between the two men. The two would later meet in 1990. August 18th 1984-Pohang Gymnasium, Pohang City, South Korea Jung-Koo Chang (24-1, 11) vs Katsuo Tokashiki (19-3-2, 4) In 1994 Korean great Jung Koo Chang [장정구] took part in a sensational fight with Japan's Katsuo Tokashiki [渡嘉敷 勝男]. Chang was defending the WBC Light Flyweight title in this bout whilst Tokashiki, a former WBA champion, was looking to become a 2-time world champion. May 18th 1991-Olympic Gymnastic Gymnasium, Seoul, South Korea Muangchai Kittikasem (14-1, 10) vs Jung-Koo Chang (38-3, 17) In 1991 we saw Korean great Jung Koo Chang [장정구] fight for the final time. The bout saw the "Korean Hawk" battle 2-weight world champion Muangchai Kittikasem [เมืองชัย กิตติเกษม], who was defending the WBC Flyweight title. December 14th 1986- Sum-In Gymnasium, Incheon, South Korea Jung-Koo Chang (31-1, 12) Vs Hideyuki Ohashi (5-1, 3) Through the 1980's South Korean fighter Jung Koo Chang was making a name for himself as one of, if not the, great South Korean fighter of all time and probably the greatest Light Flyweight in history. Chang's 11th defence came against Japanese fighter Hideyuki Ohashi, a man who being fast tracked to the top having won the Japanese national title in just his 6th professional bout. The men would have a rematch in 1988 which would be Chang's final bout before he announced his first retirement, sadly he would return to the ring due to money issue. After retirement Ohashi went into the promotional game and has instilled the fast track mentality in to his own fighters, including Naoya Inoue who won a world title in just his 5th professional contest. December 9th 1989- Indoor Gymnasium, Daegu, South Korea Jung Koo Chang (37-1, 16) Vs Humberto Gonzalez (25-0, 20) For much of the 1980's Jung-Koo Chang was a phenom in the Light Flyweight division, brushing aside all that came in front of him. Those that came up short against Chang included some great fighters like German Torres, Hideyuki Ohashi, Sot Chitalada, Isidro Perez and Hilario Zapata, the only man to beat a prime Chang. Sadly how Chang was, like many fighters, forced to fight on well beyond his prime due to financial issues. One of his later fighters came against the genuinely brilliant, and then unbeaten, Humberto Gonzalez in a bout for the WBC Light Flyweight world title. |
