September 25th 2005- Arena, Yokohama, Kanagawa, Japan Jorge Linares (16-0, 10) Vs Ayon Naranjo (13-5, 5) Japanese fans have seen Jorge Linares grow up in front of their eyes and have taken to him as one of their own. The good looking Venezuelan was just a baby when he began his career in Japan though is now a fully grown world class fighter set to fight for a third divisional world title. Skilled, fast and powerful Linares looked like he had all the tools very early and everyone of those tools was put on show against tough Filipino Ayon Naranjo. This bout sadly left Naranjo in hospital and ended his career. *Record taken from TV broadcast, boxrec notes Naranjo as 14-5 (5)

April 19th 2003- Korakuen Hall, Tokyo, Japan Jorge Linares (3-0, 2) Vs Ariel Austria (18-20-7, 7) All too often in the West we see prospect molly coddled to a world title eliminator. That doesn't happen as much in the East with Japan in particular being a country to bring prospects through quickly. Although from Venezuela it's fair to say Jorge Linares is an adopted fighter of Japan and his debut there was made in a 6 rounder, as it would be for a typical B class prospect. Linares's would fight a second 6 rounder, a decision victory over Chawal Sor Vorapin, before being moved on to 8 rounders in his third bout as he took on Thailand's Singdam Monsaichon. Linares's second 8 rounder came against the much more testing and experienced Filipino Ariel Austria, a former Filipino Bantamweight champion. February 15th 2003- Korakuen Hall, Tokyo, Japan Jorge Linares (1-0, 1) Vs Chawal Sor Vorapin (5-2)* In the West we rarely see prospects in 6 round bouts on their debut but that's exactly what happened to Japanese based Venezuelan Jorge Linares who debuted in a 6 round bout. Linares blew out his debut opponent in just 45 seconds and then he took on a most testing foe in the form of Chawal Sor Vorapin. The bout was supposed to be a showcase for the good looking youngster who had managed to get TV time despite being such a novice. In the first round it looked very much like the expected showcase but the bout ended up not being a blow out, despite the impressive start Linarse made. *Record taken from TV broadcast April 1st 2006- Korakuen Hall, Tokyo, Japan Jorge Linares (19-0, 12) Vs Saohin Srithai Condo (50-12, 34) Teiken promoted Jorge Linares is a man we all know and we likely all have our opinions of. For some he is the most wonderful offensive fighter on the planet who skills to burn and all the traits to be a star whilst others view him as a mentally fragile fighter with serious durability issues. Whatever your view it's hard to deny that he has been in some great fights over the years. Although highly touted some would suggest that Linares wasn't really tested until his 20th bout when he took on PABA Featherweight champion Saohin Srithai Condo of Thailand. Condo was still dangerous, naturally a similar size to Linares and tough making him the perfect test for Linares ahead off a world title bout. (Video courtesy of DoctorShawHi) Back in 2009 the Japanese based Jorge Linares seemed set to become a star of the lower weights. He had it all. Speed, skills, powers, good looks and an offensive that others could only dream of. It seemed he was set to break out and become a star, in fact he had just signed with Gold Boy Promotions who were set to promote him in the US. What no one expected was that Linares would be caught cold in 2009 as he took on the unbeaten but unknown Juan Carlos Salgado. Salgado was a mystery opponent but a huge under-dog going into this bout. Amazingly Salgado stopped Linares inside a round but we learned very little about the Mexican, instead it was a case of Linares being caught and never really recovering before eventually being stopped. It opened up a view that Linares couldn't take a shot and lacked a chin but it was hard to be sure about considering how short this bout was, and in fact for many it was the 2009 upset of the year. |
