Last year began as a break out year for Mexican fighter Francisco Rodriguez Jr who stopped Merlito Sabillo in March to announce himself as a world class fighter and claim the WBO Minimumweight title. A few months later Rodriguez became a unified world champion as he beat Katsunari Takayama to claim the IBF Minimumweight title. What began as Fighter of the Year campaign was derailed in November when Rodriguez was held to an unexpected draw by the unheralded Jomar Fajardo of the Philippines. To begin 2015 then men battled for a second time with a potential WBO Light Flyweight title fight on the line.

Mexican fighter Francisco Rodriguez Jr has been a thorn in the side of Asian boxers throughout 2014. In March he defeated Merlito Sabillo by 10th round TKO, to claim the WBO Minimumweight title, and then in August he defeated Katsunari Takayama, by decision, to unify the WBO belt with the IBF. His run against Asian fighters was expected to continue at Pinoy Pride 28 when he fought against Filipino journeyman Jomar Fajardo.
