May 6th 2010-San Juan Gym, Taytay, Rizal, Philippines Jomar Fajardo (0-0) vs Romeo Alayon (0-0) In 2010 Filipino fighter Jomar Fajardo made his professional debut, as he took on fellow debutant Romeo Alayon in Rizal. June 10th-Khon Kaen, Thailand Suriyan Sor Rungvisai (40-6-1, 20) Vs Jomar Fajardo (14-7-2, 7) Last year we saw Jomar Fajardo surprisingly fight to a draw with Francisco Rodriguez Jr. The result ended Rodriguez's, other strong, claim to be a contender for the Fighter of the Year, and helped take Fajardo from unknown to exciting slugger. Earlier today Thai fans saw Fajardo in the ring against former Super Flyweight title holder, and leading Bantamweight contender, Suriyan Sor Rungvisai. On paper it was mismatch based on size alone. (Video courtesy of tko.in.th) January 31st 2015- Palenque de la Feria, Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas, Mexico Jomar Fajardo (14-5-2, 7) Vs Francisco Rodriguez Jr (16-2-1, 11) Last year began as a break out year for Mexican fighter Francisco Rodriguez Jr who stopped Merlito Sabillo in March to announce himself as a world class fighter and claim the WBO Minimumweight title. A few months later Rodriguez became a unified world champion as he beat Katsunari Takayama to claim the IBF Minimumweight title. What began as Fighter of the Year campaign was derailed in November when Rodriguez was held to an unexpected draw by the unheralded Jomar Fajardo of the Philippines. To begin 2015 then men battled for a second time with a potential WBO Light Flyweight title fight on the line. December 26th 2010- Angono Sports Complex (Angono Municipal Gym), Barangay Mahabang , Angono, Rizal, Philippines Jomar Fajardo (2-2, 1) Vs Leonardo Talisic (1-5-1, 1) In 2014 the unknown Jomar Fajardo caught our attention when he battled to a draw with former unified Minimumweight champion Francisco Rodriguez Jr in a thriller. Prior to that Fajardo was unknown on the international stage though there was a little bit of video of him available, notably this fight with Leonardo Talisic. (Video courtesy of the brilliant Jerome Naldoza) Mexican fighter Francisco Rodriguez Jr has been a thorn in the side of Asian boxers throughout 2014. In March he defeated Merlito Sabillo by 10th round TKO, to claim the WBO Minimumweight title, and then in August he defeated Katsunari Takayama, by decision, to unify the WBO belt with the IBF. His run against Asian fighters was expected to continue at Pinoy Pride 28 when he fought against Filipino journeyman Jomar Fajardo. We won't ruin of this one but we will advise every fight fan to watch this one as it's a fantastic FOTY contender and it's one that warms up very quickly with round 2 being one of several brutal rounds between two men looking for a knockout and round 4 being a genuine round of the year contender. |
