July 5th 1984-Osaka-Jo Hall, Osaka, Osaka, Japan
Jiro Watanabe (21-1, 14) v Payao Poontarat (10-1, 7) I
Unification bouts are rare, we know that, but sometimes the bodies behind the titles made it even more difficult. That was clear in 1984 when Jiro Watanabe [渡辺二郎], the the WBA champion, was stripped of his title for attempting to unify with WBC champion Payao Poontarat [พเยาว์ พูนธรัตน์]. The WBA had ordered Watanabe to face Khaosai Galaxy, in a bout that sadly never truly happened (see Jiro Watanabe Vs Khaosai Galaxy), but instead the Japanese bad boy took part in this bout instead of doing what the WBA had ordered.
