June 5th 2015- Pathum Thani, Thailand Chonlatarn Piriyapinyo (54-2, 35) Vs Fred Sayuni (13-6-6, 7) Former 2-time world title challenger Chonlatarn Piriyapinyo is certainly among the most active fighters in the sport. This past Friday Chonlatarn sought his 55th win as he took on the unknown Fred Sayuni from Tanzania. (Video courtesy of tko.in.th) May 6th 2015- 700 Years Anniversary Sports St., Chiang Mai, Thailand Chonlatarn Piriyapinyo (53-2, 24) Vs Yakobus Heluka (8-10, 1) May 6th 2015 may be best remembered for a couple of world title fights involving Thai challengers who came up short against Japanese champions. Back in Thailand however fans had the chance to see some of their own fighters pick up wins, such as former 2-time world title challenger Chonlatarn Piriyapinyo, who easily saw off Indonesian visitor Yakobus Heluka. (Video courtesy of tko.in.th) March 6th 2015- Wat Thatthong School, Bangkok, Thailand Chonlatarn Piriyapinyo (52-2, 33) Vs Jason Redondo (10-2-1, 7) Late last year we saw Thailand's experienced but limited Chonlatarn Piriyapinyo being toyed with by the sensationally talented Vasyl Lomachenko. It was Chonlatarn's second venture to world title level and his second clear loss as Lomachneko did as he pleased with the Thai, and in fact fought much of the bout 1-handed. In his first bout following that loss Chonlatarn battled against Filipino visitor Jason Redondo in a bout that amounted to an easy return to action for the hugely experienced Thai, at least on paper. (Video courtesy of tko.in.th) Unbeaten records are funny. They are just numbers and at the end of the day they actually tell us very, very little about the fighter. A fighter can be 30-0 and little more than an untested hype with limited skills and clever match making or they can be 2-1 and a world champion with such exceptional talent that their promoter has allowed them to be rushed to the top. One battle between unbeaten from just a few years ago saw one fighter, Chris John, sporting a spectacular record of 47-0-2 (22) whilst his opponent, Chonlatarn Piriyapinyo, was a similarly impressive 44-0 (27). Between them the men had gone 93 fights unbeaten but at the end of the bout one man was clearly the better fighter and proved that he was more talented than his foe. We won't say much more about this bout but we will add that in less than 2 weeks Chonlatarn, now 52-1 (33), will be battling a 2-1 (1) world champion in what looks like a very tough bout for the Thai despite his clear edge in professional experience. About 2 weeks ago we reported that Thailand's Chonlatarn Piriyapinyo would be challenging Ukrainian Vasyl Lomachneko for the WBO Featherweight title on the undercard of Manny Pacquiao's bout with Chris Algieri. We know that many haven't seen much of Chonlatarn so here is footage from his "warm up" for Lomachneko. This bout saw Chonlatarn take on the very unknown Wang Yi Ming from China and put on a relatively disappointing performance to take a clear decision win over the inexperienced Chinese fighter. Whilst on paper it was a poor result it is worth noting that Ming has fought as high as 140lbs and was a bloodied up from a fighter who was on cruiser control for much of the bout. It wasn't a great performance but it was a work out for Thai who knows he'll need to be sharper than this to claim the WBO Featherweight title in November. (Note-The video starts in round 4 and features a little 2 complete rounds of the 6 round bout) |
