April 1st 1976-City Gym, Kashihara, Nara, Japan Buzzsaw Yamabe (24-4-2, 16) vs Alfredo Escalera (33-7-2, 22) I On April 1st 1976 Japan's Buzzsaw Yamabe got his first world title fight, taking on the then WBC Super Featherweight champion Alfredo Escalera, in the first of two bouts between the men. This was a bout that was regarded as massively controversial due to referee Ismael Quinones Falu, who remained as a referee for more than 40 years after this bout, but was seemingly never invited back to Japan with the JBC later appealing to the WBC to get a rematch sorted, which took place 3 months later. |
