Bangkok, Thailand
The most notable of the day's action, for us, was in Thailand where Mono29 aired an interesting card. The main event was a highly anticipated bout that saw IBF Flyweight champion Amnat Ruenroeng (16-0, 5) successfully defending his title against explosive Filipino Johnriel Casimero (21-3, 13). On paper this was a fantastic match up but sadly it resulted in a foulfest with referee Larry Doggett acting as an enabler for Amnat's dirty style. There was no real doubting the winner but the bout really was badly marred by the poor officiating which did next to nothing to force “boxing” action and instead the bout resembled a street fight at times. Amnat wasn't the only “older fighter” in action in Thailand as 35 year old Manus Boonjumnong (1-0) made his professional debut. The Thai, who appeared to be fat as a well as old, was a 2004 Olympic champion who showed real touches of class as he dominated Indonesian veteran Jamed Jalarante (23-19-1, 11) in a very 1-sided 4 round bout. Manus, despite his age, still has speed but we do suspect it'll be too little too late for him to have a serious career. The televised portion of this card saw Atchariya Virotesunobon (4-0, 1) show traits of being a really exciting prospect as he easily out pointed Indonesia's Stevi Ongen Ferdinandus (16-9-1, 8) over 10 rounds. The unbeaten man really did look classy at times with a great variety of shots, lovely movement and an exciting ability to throw combinations, though we do wonder about his power at this early stage of his career. In a bout not shown on Mono29 former world title challenger Denver Cuello (36-5-6, 24) made light work of Boy Tanto (9-17, 1), who was stopped in the 5th round. The bout was a stay busy contest for the Filipino slugger who is now expected to return to Thailand to fight Wanheng Menayothin in December in a WBC world title fight. Metro Manila, Philippines In the Philippines fans got a small show in Metro Manila. It wasn't a big one but there title action and a couple of competitive under-card bouts. The title bout saw Japanese puncher Toshi Makoto Aoki (20-12-1, 17) retain his WBC Asian Boxing Council Lightweight title with a 3rd round victory over limited Indonesian Eddy Comaro (32-24-5, 13), who was stopped for the 10th time in his career. Coming into the bout Comaro had won his last 3 but the big punching Aoki was simply too strong from the off. On the under-card there was a couple of draws. One of those saw the unbeaten Prabhjot Singh (2-0-1, 2) fight to a 6 round majority draw with Jeffrey Garcia (1-3-1, 1). The other draw saw Jerwin Mejes (2-1-1, 2) fight an even bout with Jerwin Dela Rosa (2-5-1). Queensland, Australia There was interesting action involving Asian fighters in Australia where we had several Asian fighters in action, including an all-Asian bout and a genuine upset. The all Asian bout saw Aussie based Filipino Jack Asis (34-18-5, 18) continue his Cinderella man story with a split decision win over Indonesian visitor Hero Tito (10-7-1, 3). The bout, an 8 round contest, saw Asis taking a split decision win in a less than inspiring performance, though one that saw him extend his current unbeaten record to 14 bouts (13-0-1). The upset of the card saw China's Xu Chan (6-2) claim the WBA Oceania Light Welterweight title with a unanimous decision victory over the previously unbeaten Kris George (7-1, 5). Chan went into the bout as the clear under-dog though put on an inspiring performance to claim the biggest win of his career so far. The other Asian on this card was Wang Xinghua (11-12-1) who lost a competitive decision to Will Young (5-4, 2).

This past Sunday was a busy day in Asia with cards across the area. Sadly however whilst we had a lot of fights we haven't yet got all the result.
Wuhan, China In China we had a major eye opening result as unbeaten Chinese Heavyweight Zhang Junlong (8-0, 8)* stopped American veteran Jason Gavern (26-18-4, 11) in 2 rounds in what was a very one sided bout prior to the stoppage. The win for Junlong was by far his notable and was an especially impressive one given that Gavern managed to go 4 rounds with future world title challenger Deontay Wilder. Also on this card was a win for David Gegeshidze (14-7-1, 3) defeat Stacy Fraizer (16-16, 15) to claim the the CPBF Heavyweight title. (Information here courtesy of Brent Bowers, the trainer of Zhang Junlong) Rizal, Philippines The most notable show in the Philippines came from Rizal as we had several note worthy fighters in action and a pair of title bouts. One of the most interesting men in action on this card was former WBC Minimumweight title challenger Denver Cuello (35-5-4, 23) who scored a “gimme” win over the over-matched Ardi Tefa (4-2, 3), who appears to have been a late fill in for busy journeyman Sammy Hagler. Cuello, who is hunting a second shot at a world title next year, stopped Tefa in the 3rd round of their scheduled 10 rounder. The other major name on this card was former WBC Flyweight champion Sonny Boy Jaro (38-13-5, 27) who managed to take a decision win over Danilo Pena (26-21-3, 11). On paper this result looks relatively poor however Pena was a Featherweight on the scales whilst Jaro was fighting at Super Bantamweight, a weight well above that which we usually see Jaro fighting at. In terms of title fights Yuya Nakamura (2-1, 2) claimed the inaugural WBC Asian Boxing Council silver Bantamweight title as he over-came Rochmad Santoso (11-5, 6) in the 2nd round of their bout. The other newly crowned champion was Kenta Ide (2-1-1, 1) who stopped Edsil Jungco (1-8-5) with a body shot in the 3rd round to claim the PBF Welterweight title. Nakamura and Ide were2 of 3 Japanese fighters on this card with the other being Kyota Otsuka (5-0, 3) who stopped local fighter Ricky Oyan (4-23-2, 2) in the 3rd of a scheduled 8 rounds. Lower down the card fans saw the quick finishes with debutant Arnel Baconaje (1-0, 1) scoring the quickest of them as he easily dispatched Jonathan Pedrosa (0-7-1) inside a round. It took 4 rounds for another debutant, Lawrence Ladrada (1-0, 1) to see off Maurito Placios Jr (0-3). The once beaten Crisanto Contemprato (3-1-1, 2) scored a body shot stoppage over Remus Orcada (2-3-2) in round 3 whilst Roman Canto (9-5-2, 4) stopped Jonel Borbon (1-15-1, 1) in the 3rd round. Zamboanga del Sur, Philippines A second Filipino card came from Zamboanga del Sur and was a much smaller card than the one in Rizal. The main event here saw Dexter Alimento (7-0, 5) score a 4th round KO against the limited but experienced Jherom Tuyor (6-20-2, 3), who suffered his 10th stoppage. Another stoppage saw Ryan Ralozo (8-15-2, 2) being stopped in the 7th round by the light punching Jaysever Abcede (6-3, 2) whilst Jhon Rey Lausa (9-9-3, 4) forced the 9th round retirement of Rogen Flores (13-26-5, 6). The only bout on this show that actually went the distance saw Elvis Bicoy (5-2-1, 2) taking a split decision over the previously undefeated Freddie Bisande (5-1-2, 2). Ishikawa, Japan Results from Japan are few and far between at the moment though we do have two results from the Ishikawa card. On the under-card unbeaten Filipino prospect Neil John Tabanao (10-0, 7) made light work of Thailand's win-less Tiendchai Sor Kanitsorn (0-4) with an opening round KO. This was Tabanao's 5th win of the year and his first outside of his native Philippines, it does however look like he's ready to step up significantly. In the main event the once beaten, though still promising, Daryl Basadre (14-1-1, 10) claimed a WBC Youth title as he stopped Thailand's previously unbeaten Yodsingdaeng Jor Chaijinda (6-1, 4) with an 8th round TKO. Basadre is now 5-0 (4) since being stopped in 6 rounds by the world class Suriyan Sor Rungvisai in September 2009. Another Filipino in action on this card was Mark Gil Melligen (21-4-1, 12) who also managed to stop his over-matched Thai foe, Apichat Kangkan (0-1) inside a round. The remaining 5 bouts on this show saw Chinese fighters battling against Japanese locals and included a pair of female bouts. The most notable of those 5 contests saw Yukiya Hanabusa (7-2-2, 1) taking a 6 round decision victory over the win-less Cai Xuyuan (0-2). It wasn't all good for Japanese fighters however as Cai Zongju (2-1, 1) stopped Japan's previously unbeaten Miki Matsumoto (2-1) in the most notable of the female bouts. The other female bout saw Asami Jinnari (2-0) out point Bi Xinyue (0-1). The remaining contests on this show saw Yohei Fukui (2-0, 1) score a 3rd round TKO against Zhang Fangyong (1-1) and Katsuteru Yoshifusa (3-0) extend his winning record with a shut out decision against Hou Tinglong (0-1). Kagoshima, Japan On the other Japanese show fans got 7 bouts, albeit at a very low level. The most notable of those 7 bouts saw Naoya Haruguchi (6-5, 2) take a clear decision over the limited Takeshi Nakayama (3-7-2, 1) in one of the 2 bouts scheduled for 6 rounds. The other 6 rounder was unfortunately ended partway through round 3 resulting in a technical draw between Tomohiro Nagakari (6-2-1, 1) and Takuya Taniguchi (4-5-2, 1). The only stoppage on the card saw Mitsuyoshi Fujita (3-2, 1) take a 3rd round TKO against the debuting Kento Iha (0-1). In more competitive action Genyu Nakano (0-0-1) fought to a 4 round split draw with Yuta Motoyama (1-3-1) whilst Junya Mishima (3-7-1, 3) also fought to a draw Yudai Yamakawa (2-3-1, 1). The remaining bouts both saw winners. These included Kota Hama (2-0, 1), who out pointed Takayoshi Kurokawa (1-1-1, 1) as well as Kensuke Minato (1-0) who won a debutant show down with Yusuke Tominaga (0-1) We'll be hoping to get the rest of the results from China shortly. *We were told earlier this year that Junlong was 17-0 (17) so we now assume he is really 18-0 (18) This past Saturday wasn't the biggest day in Asian boxing but it was an interesting one with a lot of fights and plenty of recognisable names in action
Davao Del Sur, Philippines The bulk of the Asian action on Saturday came from the Philippines where Sonshine Sports promoted a very deep and long card with numerous big names on it. Sadly a lot of those bigger names were matched very softly. The biggest mismatch, at least on paper, saw former WBC Minimumweight title challenger Denver Cuello (34-5-6, 22) have a field day with Thailand's horribly over-matched Jaipetch Chaiyonggym (3-2, 2). Cuello, fighting for the first time since his loss to Xiong Zhao Zhong last year, repeatedly tagged the Thai with lefts upstairs which left some nasty damage on Jaipetch's face and everntually forced him to retire. The bout was a mismatch but it was a clear tune up for Cuello who has been inactive and injured recently and needed a soft touch in all honesty. Cuello was one of 3 fighters expected to take part in title bouts next time out. Another was IBO Light Flyweigth champion Rey Loreto (19-13, 11) who did what was needed to stop Indonesian journeyman Heri Amol (34-20-4, 14). Amol, fighting for the 58th time, was stopped for just the 7th time as Loreto scored a tune up win ahead of his first title defence, scheduled for December. The third title level fighter was former IBO Super Flyweight champion Edrin Dapudong (30-6, 18) who scored a 5th round TKO against Wisanlek Sithsaithong (11-6, 6). We're now expecting Dapudong to rematch Lwandile Sityatha in an attempt to regain his IBO title, possibly before the year is out. A third big puncher in action in a 10 rounder was Lorenzo Villanueva (27-1-0-1, 24) who forced a doctors stoppage victory over Gadwin Tubigon (10-11-2, 5) with Tubigon's face looking a real mess from a suspected broken nose. The only other 10 rounder saw Rolando Magbanua (24-2, 16) quickly get rid of Joel Escol (8-16-3, 5) in just 113 seconds. Cuello wasn't the only former world title challenger on the show and former WBO Minimumweight title challenger Rommel Asenjo (26-3, 21) was also in action. Surprisingly however Asenjo really struggled as he took a majority decision over Powell Balaba (8-12-1, 5) in a very narrow 8 rounder. Another 8 rounder to go the distance saw Jelbirt Gomera (7-0, 4) out point Jhun Ryan Quimbo (4-6-1) whilst Jake Bornea (7-1, 3) out pointed Rogen Flores (13-25-5, 6). The only 8 rounder not to go the distance saw Robert Udtohan (22-1-2, 14) take out the over-matched Renz Llagas (6-7-1, 4) in the 3rd round. We also saw just a single stoppage in the 6 rounders as Ryan Lumacad (7-0-1, 4) returned from a notable break and took out Robert Awetin (5-18-2, 5) in 3 rounds. In the other 6 rounders we saw Roskie Cristobal (9-0, 7) get taken the distance, unexpectedly, by Rolly Llino (5-13-1, 2) whilst Jamie Quitariano (2-2, 1) took a decision over Bryan Samson (4-4, 2) In the 4 rounders we saw the debut of the much touted Jade Bornea (1-0, 1) who needed just 123 seconds to welcome himself to professional boxing with a quick and impressive victory over the previously unbeaten Mark Baribar (2-1-1). The other 4 rounder saw Michael Bravo (6-1, 1) take a decision over Saddam Barambangan (3-7-1, 2). Victoria, Australia Down under we saw two other Asian fighters in action and unfortunately both were defeated inside the distance. The more recognisable of the two was Filipino journeyman Aswin Cabuy (14-48-4, 7) who suffered his 21st stoppage loss after retiring at the the end of the second round of his bout with Mitchell Middleton Clark (3-0, 3). From what we under-stand Cabuy was dropped in round 2 and suffered an injury that forced him to retire at the end of the round. The other bout seems to have been more interesting as Iranian debutant Rezvan Khasmafkan (0-1) was stopped in 6 rounds by Steve Attard (5-0-2, 2). Prior to the stoppage we've been told that Khasmafkan landed a MMA style knee was deducted a point. Incidentally Attard has been scheduled to fight in Macau on November 22nd against the Macau Kid Kuok Kun Ng in what appears to be a very interesting contest. London, United Kingdom In the UK we saw Russian Heavyweight journeyman Denis Bakhtov (38-10, 25) being stopped in 2 rounds by Olympic champion Anthony Joshua (9-0, 9). Bakhtov was too small, too slow and too old to make Joshua really work for the win and stopped by the referee part way through the second round as Joshua wailed away with heavy looking shots. |
