We have been reliably informed by one of our trusted Thai sources that Zou Shiming (5-0, 1) has had his opponent for his November 22nd bout named.
The name we have been sent is that of the world ranked and unbeaten Kwanpichit OnesongchaiGym (27-0-2, 12), AKA Kwanpichit 13 Rien Express.
The bout is tougher than we had expected for Shiming though it appears obvious that Top Rank are happy to put him in hard bouts and have full belief that he will win them. After all the plan is to have Shiming fight for a world title very early next year and if he can't beat contenders then what chance does he had at winning a world title, right?
On paper this is a great test, though we've been less than impressed by Kwanpichit who we though was very lucky to get a technical draw against Ban Mananquil in August 2013. He is world ranked and does hold the WBO Oriental Flyweight title though he's not shown world class ability as of yet and his most recent win was a stoppage over Oscar Raknafa, a man Kosei Tanaka debuted against.
The bout is set to be Shiming's first 12 rounder and we're actually expecting him to give an ever more professional performance than he did against Luis De La Rosa last time out. In fact we just hope that a win over Kwanpichit will confirm that Shiming does deserve a world title fight, though we do know many fans will never truly accept Shiming no matter what he does in this sport.
For those curious this bout is set to be the chief support bout to Manny Pacquiao's (56-5-2, 28) bout with Chris Algieri (20-0, 8), a bout that will see Pacquiao defending his WBO Welterweight title for the first time since reclaiming it from Timothy Bradley earlier this year.
