There aren't many Japanese fighters who have managed to make a name for themselves in the US, however one fighter who has got a fan base stateside is the tough, and fun to watch, Welterweight hopeful Yoshihiro Kamegai (25-2-1, 22) who appears set to return to the US for his 6th bout in the states.
A recent post made by former 2-time world title challenger Alfonso Gomez (24-6-2, 12), on his twitter account, effectively announced that Kamegai would be fighting Gomez on March 20th on Fox Sports at the Fantasy Springs Casino.
This will be Kamegai's first bout since he signed a US exclusive promotional deal with Golden Boy Promotions who look like they are set to make a number of exciting fights in the coming months, with this one certainly having a lot of promise.
At the moment Kamegai's record in the US is a less than flattering 2-2-1 (2) though he has been matched relatively hard with his losses coming to Johan Perez and Robert Guerrero, both world class fighters. This however is a much easier bout for Kamegai than either of those two.
In fights in his native Japan Kamegai is an impressive 23-0 (20) and has is a former Japanese champion at 140lbs and the current OPBF Welterweight champion.
As for Gomez he has a notable cult following and has been dubbed "The Gomez" on some boxing forums. The likable 34 year old Mexican is well known for his exploits as a professional which have included an appearance on "The Contender", wins over Carson Jones, Arturo Gatti, and Jose Luis Castillo as well as losses in world title bouts to Miguel Cotto and Saul Alvarez.
At the moment we've yet to receive any other details regarding the fight though we'll be honest we're really exciting by this contest and hope to see Kamegai continuing to excite fans in both the East and the West.
(Tweet thanks to Alfonso Gomez)
