Our Korean sources have informed us that Ye Joon Kim (11-1-2, 5)* will be making his ring return on July 5th as he defends his IBF Asia Super Bantamweight title. The promising 22 year old Korean will be defending his title against Japanese challenger Yoshihiro Utsumi (12-6-3, 7).
Kim, for those who aren't aware, won his title last time out when he took a split decision over Filipino foe Virgil Puton in a very competitive bout, one that saw the Filipino being very unlucky not to take the win. Although he was fortunate last time out Kim has impressed us in the past and looked brilliant at times against Yoshuyuki Takabayashi last November. Technically he's flawed though he does appear to have the tools in his locked to go a very long way, if he can sort his attitude out.
As for Utsumi the Japanese 31 year old is much less notable. In his highest profile bout to date Utsumi was beaten, via 7th round technical decision, by Yasutaka Ishimoto. That bout came this past April and although Utsumi was competitive at times he was the loser. Other than Ishimoto it's fair to say that Utsumi hasn't faced anyone of note and interestingly this will be his first title bout.
Whilst the bout is said to be a "done deal" there does appear to still be some issues that need finalising however they are widely regarded as being formalities.
*Note Kim's record on boxrec.com is missing a result against a Thai opponent.
