Over-night the WBA released the names of the officials for the upcoming WBA "super" and WBO Super Bantamweight world title fight between defending champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (13-0, 8) and Thai veteran Sod Kokietgym (63-2-1, 28).
The referee has been announced as American Mark Nelson, a referee who should be more than qualified for the task at hand. He is highly experienced and has done numerous world title fights spread around the world, including Kazuto Ioka's bout with Wisanu Kokietgym.
The judges will also be Americans with Denny Nelson, Glen Feldman and John Poturaj all going over to Macau.
Denny Nelson is a very experienced American judge who recently sat ringside for Terence Crawford's bout with Yuriorkis Gamboa and has also done numerous international fights, including Ryo Miyazaki's 2013 contest with Carlos Velarde. Interestingly Denny Nelson is referee Mark Nelson's father. Glen Feldman is another experienced official though he has had numerous eyebrow raising scorecards, often ruling bouts even on his card. John Poturaj is the judge who somehow managed to score the recent Marvin Sonsona/Wilfredo Vazquez Jr rematch in favour of Vazquez Jr by a score of 96-92. From what we can see Mr Poturaj was last in Asia to do the Kompayak Porpramook/Jean Piero Perez bout more than a year ago.
Despite the fact that both Feldman and Poturaj have turned in some stinking cards in the last few years we tend to feel their services won't be needed, at least not if Rigondeaux performs anywhere near his capabilities.
