We have just received word that Thailand's Wanheng Menayothin (35-0, 11) will finally get his world title opportunity and more importantly will get home advantage.
Menayothin had been the WBC #1 contender for a while and had seemingly been forced to wait for his opportunity. Now however it seems that the wait has been long enough and he will get a chance to get his hands on Mexico's Oswaldo Novoa (14-4-1, 9) in a WBC world title fight in late September.
Novoa is a name that should be recognisable to fans not only of the Asian fight scene but also the lower weight divisions. He is, afterall, the man who went over the China and dethroned Xiong Zhao Zhong to claim the title earlier this year. Going in to that bout Novoa was a huge under-dog, and outsider who was viewed as a man with no chance. He however went over to China and completely smashed Zhong who looked like a child against the Mexican.
Although Menayothin is the more experienced fighter and will be at home this will still be a very tough bout with Novoa being huge at the weight, very heavy handed and a man who, as he showed in China, doesn't mind a hostile environment. This really could be a thrilling contest if Menayothin can take the power of Novoa.
We need to reiterate that we haven't heard a specific date for the fight just that it will be taking place "in the final week of September".
