On New Years Eve there were 2 competing cards on Japanese TV. One of those was on TBS and saw Hisashi Amagasa put in a brave effort in the main event against Cuban sensational Guillermo Riggondeaux, the other was on TV Tokyo and featured 3 Watanabe gym fighters, Kohei Kono, Takashi Uchiyama and Ryoichi Taguchi, each taking part in WBA world title action.
We've not received the TV figure for the TBS card however we were sent the average number for the TV Tokyo card which was apparently watched by 5.6% of the TV viewers in the country. This was 0.5% higher than last years show, which hit 5.1% on average and more impressive it was a channel high for the time slot and went directly up against the TBS card.
For western fans, who look at PPV numbers as the telling factor in a fighters popularity, these numbers may not mean a lot, however fights in Japan are typically shown on free to air TV so this number is a key figure as it helps with advertising and the such.
