On May 5th American fans, in California, got their latest chance to see Mongolian destroyer Tugstsogt Nyambayar (5-0, 5) in action. The former amateur stand out took a big step up as he took on the tough and highly experienced Juan Ruiz (24-21, 7).
Although Ruiz, fighting for the 45th professional time, is 37 he had never been stopped in a career that goes back to 2000. During his career he had claimed wins over Cristobal Cruz and Wayne McCullough and had gone the distance with highly regardrd fighters like Gary Russell Jr, Arash Usmanee, Oscar Valdez, Rico Ramos and former world title challenger Vicente Esconedo.
With Ruiz a proven tough guy we were expecting to see Nyambayar given a real work out. Instead however his power, aggression and intelligent shot selection was too much for Ruiz who retired following the 4th round of a scheduled 6 rounder.
Following the win the idea now must be for Nyambayar to take another step up, perhaps even head to facing someone in, or on the verges of, a world ranking. There really is no point in holding back the Mongolian sensation, who could go a very long way, very quickly.
