Earlier today Japanese fans saw the return to the ring of former WBC Flyweight champion Toshiyuki Igarashi (19-2-1, 11) who scored a 9th round technical decision win over Filipino visitor Renren Tesorio (13-5-3, 4).
The bout, which was tougher than expected for the Japanese fighter, saw Igarashi needing to shake off real ring rust having been out of the ring for almost a year and having had major surgery to repair a shoulder injury. This meant the bout took several rounds for Igarashi to find his rhythm though when he did he looked great and showed glimpses of his world class ability.
Following the win Igarashi stated that he was going to be competing in Super Flyweight division the intention of becoming a 2 weight world champion. On today's performance he looked a long way short of becoming a world champion though it was clear that today's bout was about returning to the ring and not about impressing.
At the moment Igarashi is some way from being ready for a world title bout though it seems clear that he has the ability and experience to compete with the divisional elite. It is worth noting however that no opponent was named by Igarashi as a target, just that he was targetting a se
