After scoring a victory this past Friday night American Light Heavyweight Tommy Karpency (22-4-1, 14) called out Russian destroyer Sergey Kovalev (23-0-1, 21).
Kovalev, the WBO Light Heavyweight champion, is said to be looking for a dance partner for his first fight of the year and whilst Karpency wouldn't be a perfect opponent he would likely be an acceptable opponent for a stay busy defense and a highlight reel KO victim.
Karpency himself is a former world title challenger who went the distance in a losing effort to Nathan Cleverly. Whilst he is 3-3 in his last 6 he has been in with world class opponents including Cleverly, Karo Murat and Andrzej Fonfara who is set to challenge WBC champion Adonis Stevenson next time out. It's those 3 men who have beaten Karpency in the last few fights that likely see him viewed as a third rate challenger, especially considering what Kovalev did to Cleverly, however is Kovalev is desperate for an opponent it's nice to know that there is a willing body donor out there.
Unfortunately it seems like the dream fight between Kovalev and Stevenson is some way off despite Kovalev making it very clear that it's the bout he wants. We've got our fingers crossed in the hope that the bout will be made at some point in 2014 though we do, admittedly, do it with baited breath.
