On September 16th last year we saw a very highly anticipated match up between unified Middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (37-0-1, 33) and Mexican mega-star Saul Alvarez (49-1-2, 34). The bout was a hotly contested fight which ended in a very controversial split decision draw, thanks in part to a terrible score-card of 118-110 to Alvarez from Adalaide Byrd.
Ever since the draw decision was announced fans have been talking about a rematch between the two men, with the contest being all but confirmed for weeks.
Today we finally saw the announcement of the contest, with HBO asking former wrestling star, and current Hollywood sensation Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson to announce the bout on their behalf. With the "People's Champion" confirming the bout would on PPV, and maybe showing that HBO are looking at the bout as one with major cross over appeal, and the chance to really try some new marketing strategies to appeal to a wider audience than usual.
The bout will see Golovkin defending his WBA, WBC, IBF, IBO and Ring Magazine titles against Alvarez, who will be looking over-come the Kazakh and further enhance his legacy as a Mexican icon.
As had long been assumed the contest will take place on May 5th, making the most of the Cinco de Mayo celebrations, and continue the tradition of having a big boxing event on the day.
With the bout just being announced no details of the under-card have yet to be confirmed, though we are expecting a number of big under-card bouts to be added to the show as we get closer the event.
