Yesterday we reported that Marlon Tapales (29-2, 12) was struggling with his weight, ahead of a WBO Bantamweight world title defense against Shohei Omori (18-1, 13) [大森 将平], with the Filipino actually having a vegetarian diet over the last few days and working out in a make shift sauna.
Sadly for Tapales his efforts this past week have been for naught with the champion losing the title on the scales.
On his first attempt at weighing in Tapales was 119.7lbs, well above the Bantamweight limit. He was then given 2 hours to lose the weight but came back even heavier, weighing in at around 120lbs on the second attempt.
For Omori the weight was no issue, with the Japanese fighter weighing in at 117.7lbs for the bout, comfortably under the divisional limit.
The bout will go ahead though Tapales has been stripped of the title due to his failure to make weight, and cannot win the title back if he wins the fight. Omori is able to win the title if he over-comes Tapales, who looked terrible at the weigh in, but any result other than an Omori win will see the title being left vacant.
Tapales looks for a repeat as he takes on Omori!
