Earlier today Japanese fans at the Korakuen Hall got the chance to see an OPBF "interim" title fight at Welterweight where former Japanese champion Suyon Takayama (24-1, 8) [高山 樹延] claimed the title with a 6th round TKO win over Filipino foe Joel Dela Cruz (19-24-3, 7).
The bout was Takayama's first vacating his national title dominated with his jab from the opening bell and slow, but surely wore down de la Cruz before dropping him with an uppercutt to the body. The show left the Filipino crouching where he took the full 10 count.
Takayama has stated that his intention now is to fight a unification bout with the OPBF regular champion, in Japan. At the moment that regular champion is Jack Brubaker, who faces Paddy Murphy in March.
