According to quotes attributed to Uchiyama's manager Hitoshi Watanabe, Fortuna's team were asking for far too much money for the bout. As a result the negotiations have essentially broken down and appear unlikely to be sorted by May, the time when Watanabe had planned for Uchiyama to be back in the ring.
As a result it seems Watanabe are going to try and get Uchiyama in the ring with WBA "interim" champion Jezreel Corrales (19-1-0-1, 7).
That's not a shock, given that that story first emerged yesterday, however the sources have indicated that the bout may act as part of a triple header on April 27th!
We already know that WBA Light Flyweight champion Ryoichi Taguchi (23-2-1, 10) [田口良一], a stablemate of Uchiyama's, will be defending his title on that date, at the Ota City Gymnasium. It's also thought that WBA Super Flyweight champion Kohei Kono (31-8-1, 13) [河野 公平] will be on the card.
At the moment no opponents have been set for Kono or Taguchi, though rumours have emerged that Taguchi may face former champion Alberto Rossel (34-9-0-1, 13) and Kono may be up against interim champion Luis Concepcion (34-4, 24). It may well be that we see TV Tokyo broadcasting a triple header with all 3 champions defending their titles against Latin American challengers. It could also be that we end up with a Japan Vs Panama show, if perhaps Watanabe could lure Leroy Estrada (14-2, 5) over to Japan to face Taguchi.
Whilst we, like pretty much everyone else, would have loved to see Uchiyama Vs Fortuna we can also understand Watanabe's frustrations and we can also see how exciting it would be to get a triple header to kick off the Japanese "Golden Week".
Although the rumoured Taguchi and Uchiyama bouts aren't great we would love to see Kono Vs Concepcion and that really does have the ingredients of a FOTY candidate.
Again we must remember that these are only rumours but the noise around them is growing and major sources in Japan are now running with the potential of the Uchiyama Vs Corrales bout and the triple header idea with Mr Watanabe being happy to fuel the stories.
