Yesterday Japanese fans saw Kazuto Ioka claim the WBA Flyweight title to become the second ever Japanese 3-weight world champion. At the start of May Takahiro Ao (27-3-1, 12) will attempt to become the third Japanese fighter to achieve the feat as he takes on the teak tough Raymundo Beltran (29-7-1, 17), who is himself fighting in his third world title bout.
Today Ao set off on his journey for that bout, catching a plan from Narita airport.
Prior to catching his plane Ao gave some comments to the press suggesting that he couldn't wait for the bout and that his preparation so far had been excellent with weight loss being on track and that he was feeling good about himself.
The Japanese 31 year old, who will be fighting the day before the mega-fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather, said that he was looking forward to fighting in Las Vegas and that he was going to enjoy the atmosphere.
If Ao is successful on May 1st he'll not only join the list of Japanese 3 weight world champions, which include Ioka and Koki Kameda, but also the short list of Japanese fighters who have won world titles on the road.
