Yesterday saw Chinese Heavyweight Taishan Dong (0-0) weigh in for the first time as a professional boxer and, as one would expect, he turned heads in a big way.
Stood at 6'11" Dong towered over every one at the weigh in though did look in great shape for a man who was 283lbs on the scales.
The big question about Dong, who makes his debut later tonight when he battles against Alex Rozman (2-6, 1), is whether he'll have the skills to match his size. If he does then there is going to be a lot of talk about this Chinese man mountain who could be the first Oriental Heavyweight to make a real mark in the US.
We're not expect to be too impressed by Dong tonight though he will certainly get some attention, even if it is just for his size and nationality as opposed to his skills, technique or power. Of course with Golden Boy Promotions backing him there is a real sense of excitement behind him and hopefully that excitement will last for more than just a single bout.
With fellow Chinese Heavyweight Zhang Zhilei (0-0) set to debut on August 8th, against the unbeaten Matt McKinney (0-0-1), it appears as if China is set to make a serious assault on the Heavyweight division. With a country as large as China we would be shocked if we didn't see a serious Heavyweight contender from the country in the next few years.
