Today our Thai friend Pal informed us that another strange bout has been announced with the Thai media reporting that there is now a deal in place for Stamp Kiatniwat (13-0, 6) to face Gregorio Lebron (13-2, 11) for the WBA interim Flyweight title on July 29th. This isn't just a questionable bout but instead it's completely ridiculous.
Stamp Katniwat is one of the most promising young fighters in Thailand. The 18 year old has been tipped for the top by those in the know in Thailand for a while and last August he did indeed score a major win, as he over-came former world champion Kwanthai Sithmorseng in what Stamp's 9th professional bout. Since the win over Kwanthai however we've seen Stamp beat relatively poor opponents on the whole, though Indonesia's Espinos Sabu did give him an excellent test in January.
Although talented Stamp has done nothing to "earn" a shot at a world title, even an interim one.
As for Lebron he's a 33 year old Dominican who has previously claimed the Dominican Republic and WBA Fedelatin titles at Flyweight. At the moment he's on an 11 fight winning streak after starting his career 2-2 though he has yet to face an opponent of any real note. Interestingly he has fought as high as Super Bantamweight though he's worked his way down to Flyweight where he has been competing for the last few years.
The recent WBA rankings have Stamp at #6 and Lebron at #7. Ahead of those two are the likes of Luis Concepcion, Yodmongkol Vor Saengthep, Brian Viloria and Juan Carlos Reveco. We do wonder if the rankings are going to be "altered" at the start of July.
For those wanting to watch the bout it will be aired on Thai channel 3 and will take place in Chiang Khan, Loei province.
We would like to say a big thanks to Pal for this news.
