Back in June we reported that Filipino veteran Sonny Boy Jaro (37-13-5, 27) was in talks to face the unbeaten WBC Super Flyweight champion Carlos Cuadras (30-0, 24). It seems those talks continued long after the story dropped beneath the radar and today it was announced that the two men will indeed face off.
The bout will take place on September 20th at a yet to be decided venue in Mexico and it will be the first defence for Cuadras who won his title with a technical decision victory over the hard hitting Srisaket Sor Rungvisai. We had hoped for a rematch between Srisaket and Cuadras though it appears that Cuadras is wanting to make an "easy" defence of his belt before facing a top contender at 115lbs.
Prior to this announcement Jaro, a former WBC Flyweight champion, was some how ranked at #11 by the WBC. In his last 6 bouts Jaro has gone 3-3 losing decision to Toshiyuki Igarashi, Hiroyuki Hisataka and Gerpaul Valero whilst he's managed to blast out 3 below par opponents. Certainly not the form of an up coming title challenger.
Whilst we wish Jaro the best he is certainly not a man who "deserves" this shot.
