Yesterday we saw Sho Kimura (16-1-2, 9) [木村翔] successfully defend the WBO Flyweight title, as he stopped countryman Toshiyuki Igarashi (23-3-3 12) [五十嵐 俊幸] in a bloody, enthralling and enjoyable war at the Ota City Gymnasium.
Today he, along with the head of the Aoki Gym, took part in a press conference talk about the fight and the 2017 that has seen Kimura go from a total unknown to one of the key figures at Flyweight.
Early in the conference they spoke about Zou Shiming, and their worry regarding Shiming's reported blindness. It was, afterall, Shiming that helped put Kimura in his current position and it did seem like they are wishing him well with his recovery
The press conference was quite a playful one between the two men who showed a real relationship there, unlike some promoters who see fighters as a commodity to be tossed aside. This was more of a father and son style relationship, or one between close friends.
In regards to serious talk Kimura has been offered opportunities in China to reaise his profile further over there, but did suggest wanting to become a bigger name at home in Japan and it seems like he is going to try and foster a long term relationship with TBS, who aired yesterday's bout live as part of their Kyokugen show
