Mr Takehara fought as a professional 25 times between 1989 and 1996 running up an impressive record of 24-1 (18) whilst becoming the first, and so far only, Japanese fighter to win a world title above Light Middleweight. His crowning glory in the ring was his win over Jorge Fernando Castro in 1995 which saw him claiming the WBA Middleweight world before losing it in his first defense against William Joppy the following year.
From the information we've been sent Mr Takehara has been suffering with health problems since late last year when he began been suffering with hematuria. This year however the problems have increased and he was originally diagnosed with bladder cancer. From what we understand those issues have worsened as he's began to see the cancer metastasis to his lymph nodes.
According to our source the former-fighter, who now runs a gym with close friend Takanori Hatakeyama, has recently received surgery and is now on anti-cancer drugs.
We would like to wish Mr Takehara the best of luck in his battle with cancer.
