Yesterday fight fans tuned in to TBS to watch Japan's brave Shingo Wake (20-5-2, 12) [和氣 慎吾] battle against the big puncher Dominican Jonathan Guzman (22-0-0-1, 22) in what turned out to be a genuinely brilliant fight.
Sadly for Wake the fight ended in a very painful loss with his face being left unrecognisable by the time of the final bell.
Following the fight he was given a medical examination and, due to the various swellings and other bumps and lumps, he wasn't able to get a correct reading on his injuries. Instead he has been informed that he has a possible fracture of his cheek bone and a possibly fractured rib and he's thinking he may also have an injury to his hand. As well as the obvious swelling around the face, the cut under the right eye and a cut on the right eye lid.
Despite the injuries the fighter hasn't been sorry for himself but for the fans who went out to watch him put up an amazing effort and he apologised to them after the fight, for not winning the world title and for coming up short against the big punching Guzman. In a blog entry he also apologised for not talking to the fans who had been supporting him following the bout. Given the injuries and emotions however it seemed fair to get them sorted than to take the microphone whilst still in the ring.
Whilst Wake was battered and beaten yesterday it does sound like he'll be looking to return to the ring when the injuries are all healed. That may take a while but there doesn't appear to be any suggestion that he's considering retirement.
