In June we see Shingo Wake (18-4-2, 11) take part in his most significant bout to date as he faces Thailand's Mike Tawatchai (35-7-1, 21) in an IBF Super Bantamweight world title eliminator. Whilst we've known about that bout for a while we were pleasantly surprised by a recent bit of news regarding Wake's training for the bout.
That surprise was that he's now been joined in the gym by former WBA Super Flyweight champion Katsuya Onizuka.
Onizuka, known as "Spanky K", was an exciting an impressive fighter back in his hey day back in the 199's. He ran up an impressive record of 24-1 (17) with 5 world title defenses between 1992 and 1994 before hanging up his gloves following a 9th round TKO loss to Hyung Chul Lee.
From what we understand Onizuka will be helping with Wake's training for the upcoming bout and may take a long term part in Wake's development if the two men click. From the pictures we've seen of the two in the gym, along with Wake's current trainer, it does seem like the two are working well together.
For those who have never seen Onizuka in action before we have included his first world title defense, against Kenji Matsumura, below.
