Yesterday Japanese fight fans saw WBA Light Flyweight champion Ryoichi Taguchi (26-2-2, 12) [田口良一] put on a great performance as he stopped mandatory challenger Robert Barrera (18-2, 12) in a very one sided bout.
Today Taguchi took part in a press conference and it was made very clear that a deal between Taguchi and WBO Light Flyweight champion Kosei Tanaka (9-0, 5) [田中恒成] had been agreed in principle.
The champion stated that he had been frustrated by his previous bout, a split decision draw with Carlos Canizales at the end of 2016, it seems like the long wait to return to the ring had soured his demour prior to facing Barrera. Unfortunately for the challenger the frustrations came out in a bit of a beating and at press conference today Taguchi seemed like his usual, happy, smiley and playful self.
Whilst the bout with Tanaka appears to have been agreed it's clear that Tanaka will himselff need to retain his title when he returns to the ring on September 13th against Palangpol CP Freshmart (14-1, 8) [คู่เอก พลังพล ซีพีเฟรชมาร์ท]. If he does that then we'd expect confirmation of Taguchi Vs Tanaka to come in the days that followed.
