Tomorrow we'll see a rare lower weight unification bout, as WBA Light Flyweight champion Ryoichi Taguchi (26-2-2, 12) [田口良一] takes the IBF champion Milan Melindo (37-2, 13) in one of the most interesting bouts to take place at Light Flyweight in quite a while.
Today the two men took part in their weigh in for the contest and both men managed to make the divisional limit.
On the scales this morning Melindo came in the lighter man. He was around 107.3lbs on the scales, well under the divisional limit, and looked great on the scales. Although a mile under the allowed he didn't look like a man who had drained himself or a fighter who had over-trained but instead looked like someone who was in his prime physical condition. Amazingly this was his lightest weight in years and it seems like he;s really put the work in and it would explain his calm confidence since arriving in Japan.
Taguchi was also comfortably under the limit, coming in around 107.6lbs, and like Melindo has worked himself into fantastic shape. He, like the Filipino, oneof his lowest weights and has clearly taken the fight very seriously. He has been wanting a big fight for a while and it looks like he has done done everything to prepare to make a statement going into this unification contest against the technically brilliant Melindo.
