In May Japanese boxing fans were left in shock when the highly toutedRyo Matsumoto (17-1, 15) [松本 亮] suffered an unexpected stoppage loss to little known Mexican Victor Uriel Lopez (9-5-1, 4). In the weeks that followed it was revealed that Matsumoto was unfit going into that bout, and was suffering from a chronic illness that had previously effected his amateur career.
Over the past day or so Matsumoto has returned to the Ohashi gym, and has looked in good spirits with the illness on the back foot.
According to sources in the Ohashi Gym the youngster will be looking to avenge his loss to Lopez later in the year, before racing onwards and upwards.
We've not received word of what the illness was but we suspect that in future Matusmoto, and his team, will take a more cautious view in regards to fights and will abort fights if the illness reappears in the build up to a bout, as it had done bfore the bout with Lopez.
