Just over a week ago Japanese boxing was left in genuine shock as Jezreel Corrales dismantled Takashi Uchiyama (24-1-1, 20) [内山 高志] in 2 rounds. Today that shocked continued as the very highly touted n Ryo Matsumoto (17-1, 15) [松本 亮] suffer a very unexpected defeat to face Mexican Victor Uriel Lopez (9-5-1, 4).
In the opening round Matsumoto made things look easy, out boxing Lopez at his pace and essentially doing what was expected of him. In round 2 and 3 Matsumoto continued to look the dominant fighter, but was seeing Lopez grow into the fight.
In round 4 the bout swung in favour of Lopez with Matsumoto looking like a tired and worn fighter. With the bout turning to Lopez the Mexican could smell a finish and rocked Matsumoto several times in round 4 before forcing the referee to break up the fight in round 5 with Matsumoto looking like a spent fighter.
Interesting reports from Japan have seen Hideyuki Ohashi say that Matsumnoto wasn't in good condition, physically, for the bout. Something that his performance clearly showed.
