Last Sunday Japanese fans in Tokyo were left shocked as the very highly touted Ryo Matsumoto (17-1, 15) [松本 亮] suffered an unexpected stoppage loss to little known Mexican Victor Uriel Lopez (9-5-1, 4). At the time it was a shock with Matsumoto being one of the most hotly tipped Japanese prospects and Lopez being a complete unknown.
Earlier today it was revealed that Matsumoto was still in hospital following the bout, and that he wasn't actually healthy when he fought Lopez.
Earlier today Matsumoto's promoter, Hideyuki Ohashi, reported that Matsumoto was suffering a chronic condition that had previously forced him to pull out of an amateur tournament. The condition had started to show it's self ahead of the Lopez bout and Mr Ohashi stated that he should have called off the bout for Matsumoto when he started showing symptoms of his illness.
We'd like to wish Ryo a quick recovery and hope that, whatever the issue is, it clears up rather than derails his career completely.
