The rumour suggests that we will have a trio of world title fights courtesy of Watanabe gym, though full details haven't yet been made clear.
The most believable part of the rumouris that WBA Super Featherweight champion Takashi Uchiyama (21-0-1, 17) will be defending his world title. For Uchiyama this would be a 4th successive New Years Eve show that he would have headlined and sits in line with what we would assume as being highly likely, despite previous rumours to suggest he would fighting in November. For Uchiyama it would have marked exactly a year since he last fought, defending his title against Daiki Kaneko on December 31st 2013, though it would put a disappointing year behind him.
Another equally as believable part of the rumour is that WBA Super Flyweight champion Kohei Kono (30-8, 13) would also be defending his title on the same show. Again this fits in with what we expect of Kono who has featured on the last two New Years Eve shows that Uchiyama has been on, and incidentally won his first world title on one such show in 2012 when he stopped Tepparith Kokietgym. As with Uchiyama it would allow Kono to put a frustrating year behind him and move on after a lot of problems with the WBA and Koki Kameda. It would also give time to Kono's team and Kameda's team to make a deal for a fight in 2015, if both get past their upcoming foes.
The most interesting part of the rumour concerns former Japanese Light Flyweight champion Ryoichi Taguchi (20-2-1, 8) who is said to be in talks with WBA Light Flyweight champion Alberto Rossel (32-8-0-1, 13). This would be a fantastic opportunity for Taguchi to put his loss to Naoya Inoue from last year well behind him though it does come with some issues, notably that Taguchi is one of half a dozen men supposedly eyeing up Rossel's title. In the last 12 months we've seen almost everyone at 108lbs linked to Rossel including Randy Petalcorin and Palangpol CP Freshmart and it would seem likely that Rossel is happy to sell his next fight to the highest bidder which could result in a bidding war to get him in the ring.
At the moment neither Kono or Uchiyama had had names rumoured to us though if this comes together as speculated then we could be in for a treat and we have to suspect that announcements will be forth coming shortly.
With just 11 or so weeks of the year left we suspect that there may be a lot of boxing left before the year is out!
