The former WBA Minimumweight and WBA Light Flyweight champion recently gave up his Light Flyweight title as he announced his intention to campaign full time at 112lbs. His first fight since giving up the 108lb title sees him taking on Mexico's Juan Kantun (21-5-3, 15) in what looks like a reasonable test on paper.
Unfortunately Kantun is 3-4-1 and when looked at in terms of his recent form he really shouldn't pose Gonzalez any problems. Rocky Fuentes dropped Kantun numerous times in their bout last year and David Sanchez stopped him last time out.
It's expected that if Gonzalez beats Kantun in style he could be back as early as summer for a world title fight. There are rumours that he could be fighting either WBO/WBA super champion Juan Francisco Estrada or WBC champion Akira Yaegashi. Both of those fights would be great to watch and both could be made in Asia. Gonzalez v Yaegashi is a natural for Japan whilst Gonzalez v Estrada would make a lot of sense for Macau.
