Gonzalez, fighting in his first bout since renouncing the WBA Light Flyweight "super" title, was given a really good work out by brave Mexican Juan Kantun (21-6-3, 15) who came to fight and believed he could beat Gonzalez. Kantun came out firing hard at the much feared Nicaraguan for 4 rounds though was slowly broken down by Gonzalez's heavy, clean and accurate shots which took their toll in rounds 5 and 6.
By the end of the fifth round Kantun was beginning to look out gunned and out matched. This got worse in round 6 as Gonzalez went up a gear and finished off Kantun, dropping him twice with the referee stopping the contest after the second knock down.
We're now expecting to see Gonzalez on April 6th at the Ota Ward Gymnasium on the Ohashi promoted show that features Yaegasgi defending his belt against Odilon Zaleta. If both Yaegashi and Gonzalez come out victorious on that show then they are set to be matched later this year in a bout that promises to be something special.
