It's been confirmed in the last 24 hours that Filipino Randy Petalcorin (21-1-1, 16) will be fighting Walter Tello (20-7, 8), of Panama, on August 26th in Shanghai for the WBA interim Light Flyweight title.
We had reported a few days ago that Petalcorin's team was talks with 3 fighters for the bout and that Tello, the WBA #14 ranked Minimumweight, was their preferred target. It seems the talks must have gone well and the bout is now signed ready to go.
Of the 3 men suggested for the fight we felt Tello was the "easy option" for the talented Petalcorin though with the Filipino having been waiting a while for the shot we have no real issue with this bout, especially considering that it's likely he will have to defend the belt against a talented challenger early next year.
The bout is now expected to headline a show which will also feature Ik Yang (16-0-0-1, 11) in the co-feature.
We'll admit it's not a mind blowing card but it's great to see Petalcorin getting his shot and it's also fantastic that we're getting more international fights in the Chinese mainland which appears ready to become a boxing hub.
