This past week saw the announcement that Chinese world title hopeful Qiu Xiao Jun (20-2, 9) [裘晓君] would get his long awaited shot at a world title.
The announcement, officially made on May 9th in China, saw his promoter Liu Gang, of Zovi Boxing, confirm that Jun would be facing Panamanian based Venezuelan Nehomar Cermeno (23-5-1, 13), in a bout for the vacant WBA Super Bantamweight title on June 24th.
For Jun the bout is one he has been waiting for, and in fact an opportunity at a belt he thought he would be fighting for in February, before the WBA reversed their decision. It is however a step up in class for the Chinese fighter against a man with genuine world class ability, though it is fair to say that Cermeno is beyond his prime at 36 and has been very inactive in recent years with just 3 fights in 36 months and only one notable win in the last 6 years.
The card, being promoted by both Zovi promotions and Sampson Boxing, will also several other title bouts, including a WBA Super Featherweight title contest between Javier Fortuna (29-0-1, 21) and Jason Sosa (18-1-1, 14) and a WBA International Super Featherweight title bout between Xu Can (8-2) and Corey McConnell (15-1-1, 2), in a bout that we expect may go the distance with just 2 stoppage wins in a combined 27 bouts.
