On Monday the Japanese amateur team spent a day training at the Ioka Gym ahead of the upcoming Asian Games.
For some eagle eyes readers they will be able to spot a number of familiar faces in the pictures including the likes of former 2-weight world champion Kazuto Ioka, former Minimumweight title holder Ryo Miyazaki and promising prospects Masayoshi Nakatani and Sho Ishida.
The training was a move to help everyone involved with an over arching idea to actually bring a level of professionalism to the amateur ranks. How that will work is yet to be seen though we imagine it will centre around the top amateur stars, such as Satoshi Shimizu and Shota Hayashida, getting better training and for that to filter down through the amateur ranks.
For all the professional success Japanese fighters get there is a lack of amateur success on the international stage if the top amateur are getting better training and get to spar with top professionals then there is likely to be a big improvement in what the amateurs do in the big tournaments.
With positive feedback from both the pros and the amateurs we'll hopefully see more of this joint training in the future.
