Next Sunday we will see Japanese sensation Naoya Inoue (10-0, 8) [井上 尚弥] defending his WBO Super Flyweight world title against experienced Thai challenger Petchbarngborn Kokietgym (38-7-1, 18) [เพชรบางบอน ก่อเกียรติยิม].
Today, ahead of that bout, Inoue took part in a public training session that saw him show off his skills as well as spend time talking to the media and answering questions. Thought he looked relaxed, calm and confident.
Inoue admitted that Petchbarngborn wasn't the most forrmidable of challengers but had focused on polishing his abilities in training knowing that huge fights are, potentially, just around the corner. The polishing in training has seen him work on his defense, one of his few flaws, and he has seemingly been developing that whilst sparring with the naturally bigger Genesis Servania of the Philippines.
That sparring and "polishing" has been not so much focused on this coming bout bout but instead the longer term goal of facing Roman Gonzalez and he has said he wants to look impressive against Petchbarngborn to help build towards future bouts, including the much anticipated show down with Gonzalez.
As for the training sessions the actual training was limited to shadow boxing, rope jumping and mitt work with his father, however with more than 100 rounds already under his belt for the bout, and a solid 12 round spar with 4 sparring partners, Inoue looked in great shape and didn't really need to take part in a sparring session this close to fight time.
