Shibata, defending the belt against Mexico's Guadalupe Martinez (6-6, 3), made good use of her top level experience as well as her legs and skills as she boxed carefully behind the jab. Although obviously nervous early on Shibata was never really in any trouble and was a clear winner come the final bell.
The cards, which read 99-91, 98-93 and 98-92, were hardly needed. At best Martinez may have won 3 rounds, and that's being generous. At worst she was pretty much shut out.
For Shibata this defense will be a weight off her shoulders. She was somewhat fortunate to win the title against Alondra Garcia and some seemed to expect her to be given an equally close contest here. Instead she proved she deserved to be mentioned alongside the top level fighters in the division.
