Earlier today fight fans at the Korakuen Hall saw former Japanese Super Featherweight champion Rikki Naito (19-2, 7) [内藤 律樹] claim his second professional title, as he stopped Filipino Jeffrey Arienza (16-7-1, 10) to become the new OPBF Light Welterweight champion.
The talented Japanese fighter got off to a great start, showing the difference in skills as he found a home for his jab and his southpaw left hand. Arienza, to his credit, tried to press and come forward, but was unable to much the fluiditiy and speed of Naito, who looked the much more talented fighter.
After 4 rounds the open scoring had the bout a shut out to Naito and that seemed to get the best out of Arienza, who moved up a gear as he tried to keep pace with the Japanese fighter, and took some heavy body shots in return. Sadly the more Arienza tried the more the bout seemed like a lost cause, despite some success in rounds 6 and 7.
In round 9 a tiring Arienza was unable to avoid an assault from Naito and the referee was forced to step in and save the Filipino, who hd shown his toughness, but was never really competitive with Naito.
