Earlier today fight fans in Kyoto saw OPBF Lightweight champion Masayoshi Nakatani (15-0, 9) [中谷 正義] record his his 8th defense of the title as he over-came Filipino challenger Ryan Sermona (20-9-1, 13) in what was a bit of a mismatch.
Priced as an almost unbackable favourites with some online bookies Nakatani controlled the bout using his jab from the opening round to keep his southpaw challenger at range. From then on it was a beat down with Sermona being dropped 4 times during the bout before being stopped midway through round 4.
The bout was Nakatani's 4th stoppage win in his last 5 defenses and it's clear he's beyond this level now. Hopefully Ioka gym will push him forward towards a world title shot, but given the rumours coming out about the Ioka gym at the moment there could be issues with Nakatani's future and it could continue being a frustrating time for the elongated Osakan.
For Sermona it's hard to see what he did to deserve this opportunity, given he was 5-5-1 in his previous 11 but given the beating he was given it's clear he's not close to this level, and he is now 0-3 in Japan.
