On Friday evening in China fans had the chance to see a thrilling female title bout as emerging Chinese fighter Cai Zong Ju (6-1, 1) narrowly out-pointed former 2-weight world champion Mari Ando (12-8, 5) in a gutsy, and fortunate, performance from the local girl.
In the early rounds Ju had genuine success with her youthful speed and timing. The Chinese fighters early success was soon forgotten by the middle rounds as Ando's toughness and will to win took over and she began to take the fight to Ju who was forced to back up, and eat a lot of big shots.
The offensive work of the visiting Japanese fighter took it's toll on Ju who was bleeding from the nose from round 5 and continued to take big shots as Ando searched for the knockout. Sadly though Ju managed to survive to the final bell.
Despite the excellent effort from Ando she was never likely to win a decision in China and showed here as Ju managed to successfully defend her WBC International female Minimumweight title and claim the OPBF interim female Minimumweight title. Despite her "win" it's fair to say that Ju will not be chasing a rematch after her struggles here. As for Ando it was another close loss, just like her defeats to Su Yun Hong and Yuko Kuroki.
