Marco Antonio Rubio fails weight, cannot win titles tomorrow against Golovkin; Donaire and Walters both make Featherweight
We love boxing. If we didn't we wouldn't run this site. Sadly for all the love we have of the great sport there are part of it that really, really irritate us, such as fighters failing to make weight or fighters refusing to fight the best contenders available.
Sadly one of this weekend's big fights, the clash between Middleweight destroyer Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27) and Mexican contender Marco Antonio Rubio (59-6-1, 51), has seen one man, Rubio, fail to make weight.
The Mexican, who was supposed to be attempting to claim the WBA Middleweight super title, has failed to make weight and will not be able to win the title, instead he will be paying the Kazakh a portion of his purse.
Whilst it is frustrating that Rubio has screwed up his weight it's a shame for Golovkin who will find himself up against a bigger man. Saying that however this may give Golvokin a challenge, something that seemed unlikely just 24 hours ago.
As for the show's other major bout, a WBA Featherweight title unification bout between Filipino star Nonito Donaire (33-2, 21) and unbeaten Jamaican Nicholas Walters (24-0, 20), saw both men weighing in under the 126lb limit for their fight. Notably however Walters did look the much bigger man despite the fact both weighed the same on the scales.
