Filipino veteran Malcolm Tunacao (35-3-3, 20) may be 36 years old but he showed that age was only a number earlier today as he dominated the significantly younger Ryuta Otsuka (14-7-2, 4) en-route to claiming a 5th round technical decision.
Otsuka looked confident to start the bout and fired off his 1-2's early on. Unfortunately for him they were nothing to make Tunacao worry and the Filipino took his time before firing back heavier and calculated counters. As the bout progressed the experience of the two men really told with Tunacao becoming more and more dominant and running up a clear lead through the first 4 rounds.
In round 5 Otsuka tried to fight back hard though sadly for him that caused a clash of heads which left him bleeding from the right eye and bridge of the nose. This caused the referee to stop the bout and take the contest to the score cards early. From there there was only one man winning the bout, Tunacao.
One of the cards had the bout a 50-46 to Tunacao whilst the other two cards favoured him 49-46, giving him a unanimous technical decision and his third successive win following a stoppage loss last year to Shinsuke Yamanaka. As for Otsuka, a former Japanese Super Flyweight title challenger, this was his second loss in 3 fights. Strangely that other recent loss for Otsuka was also a 5th round technical decision loss which came to the then Japanese Super Flyweight champion Teiru Kinoshita.
