Earlier this month we reported that Japanese Lightweight champion Kota Tokunaga (16-2, 11) would be defending his title, for the second time, on December 16th. At the time of that announcement there was no named opponent however today Tokunaga's opponent was named.
The opponent for Tokunaga will be first time challenger Kazuhiro Nishitani (15-3-1, 7).
On paper it looks a good defense for Tokunaga though the reality is that Nishitani really hasn't shown anything that should trouble the champion, who has improvedly markedly in recent fights.
The challenger, a 28 year old fighting out of the VADY gym, has gone 1-1-1 in his last 3 bouts however he has lost to his most notable opponents, including Tetsuya Nishinaga and recent challenger Yuhei Suzuki, in fact Suzuki beat him in his only previous 10 round bout.
Although we suspect this will be a mismatch it does need to be said that Nishitani has never been stopped and that this bout will be the secondary bout on the show, behind the WBO Bantamweight title eliminator between Shohei Omori (15-0, 10) and Marlon Tapales (27-2, 10).
