One of our Japanese sources has informed us that the recent Kosei Tanaka (5-0, 2) Vs Julian Yedras (24-2, 13) fight garnered around 3,000,000 viewers. The figure isn't huge compared to some fights in Japan but it's a solid overall mark considering the the fight was screened in the early part of the afternoon on a Saturday and was only shown in a couple of areas of the country.
In Tanaka's home of Chukyo the bout reached around 7.5% of the population* which accounts for around 655,000 viewers on local channel CBC. On TBS, which is shown in the Kanto region**, the bout got a 5% share which accounts for 2,130,000 millions viewers.
Notably the contest wasn't shown live in the Kansai area, which boasts a population of 22,000,000 million.
Whilst the figures are certainly not massive they are solid and we suspect that future Tanaka bouts will see a growth in his viewers, especially if he faces a more notable opponent next time out, or fights as part of a double header. It's also fair to say he will be given a more promising time slot in the future.
